The artwork for the Eatery was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust to highlight the heritage of the garden village of New Earswick. The aim was to add ‘a sense of place’ to the dining hall without being too explicit . I was also asked to commission and curate work by members of the community within the space.
Looking at the room as a whole and considering the function, I designed a range of pieces including paintings and soft furnishings. Having researched in the JRHT archives, I developed imagery from a range of source materials including contemporary photographs and publications. I led community volunteers and local makers, commissioning work, including pots made from clay from the village by Dan Piper – a Zine by Harriet Bailey and turned-wood pieces by the volunteer-run Community Action for Nature.
Location: Folk Hall, New Earswick, York, YO32 4AQ. Visitors are welcome to view the work on display.
