The artwork for the Eatery was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust to highlight the heritage of the garden village of New Earswick. The aim was to add ‘a sense of place’ to the space without being too explicit – also to commission and curate work by members of the community.
Looking at the room as a whole and considering the function, I designed a range of pieces, including paintings, for the walls. I also painted a series of watercolours which I used as textile panels for cushions. I worked with other community and JRHT staff makers, commissioning ceramic pots made from clay from the village by Dan Piper – a Zine by Harriet Bailey and turned-wood pieces by the volunteer-run Community Action for Nature.
Location: Folk Hall, New Earswick, York. Visitors are welcome to view the work on display.
